Location

Background | History Of Queen Elizabeth National Park
This national park derives its name from the late Queen Elizabeth II of England who visited Uganda in 1952. Before the park’s land was inhabited by the Basongole who were nomadic pastoralists.
However, due to the breakout of smallpox in the area, the Basongole fled to DR Congo and wildlife and vegetation came back to life in the park. Therefore, this area was then protected by the British Protectorate Government in 1906.
Lake George and the Ishasha area were declared as controlled areas in 1912. The people were evicted and the outbreak of sleeping sickness in 1930 made this more successful.
The declaration of the area into a national park was approved on 31st March 1952 and it was named Kazinga National Park. However, it was renamed two years later to commemorate the visit of Queen Elizabeth II and it became Queen Elizabeth National Park.

b). Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park derives its name from a Runyakitara word “Mubwindi” denoting a dark place, alluding to the thick dense forest.
This fabulous park covers an area of 321 km2 with an altitude of 1,160 – 2,607 m above sea level.

Bwindi National Park is located in Southwestern Uganda in Kisoro.
Background | History Of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
This national park was first gazetted in 1932 when two blocks of Bwindi Impenetrable forest reserve were formed as crown forest reserves.
In 1964, the reserve was designated as an animal sanctuary to protect the mountain gorillas and was named Impenetrable Central Forest Reserve. In 1991 the reserve was designated as a national park and it was named Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.
Mubare Gorilla family was the first to be available for tourism in April 1993. This park is a UNESCO World Heritage site designated in 1994 because of its abundant biodiversity and ecological importance.

8 people are permitted to visit a Gorilla family per day and it lasts for around 2-8 hours depending on where you see the Gorillas. And, when the apes are spotted, you be with them for 1 full hour.
- Gorilla Habituation; this is the slow and gentle introduction of wild Gorillas to human presence. Gorilla habituation is done within the Rushaga sector and only 2 families are available for this activity and these are the “Bikyingi and Bushaho”.
Similarly to Gorilla trekking, it also starts with a briefing though here you spend 4 full hours with the Gorillas.
- Birdwatching; Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a birder’s paradise with over 350 bird species with 14 species not recorded anywhere else in Uganda. This park has 23 Albertine Rift endemics which is 90% of the Albertine Rift endemics.

c). Murchison Falls National Park
Murchison Falls National Park is one of the amazing national parks of Uganda having the World’s strongest waterfalls. It is the oldest and biggest national park in Uganda covering an area of 3,840m2 with an altitude of 127m above sea level.
Location
This park is located northwest of Kampala the capital of Uganda in the Masindi district. Murchison Falls National Park lies at the end of the Eastern Rift Valley and it is bordered by Budongo Forest in the south.

Murchison Falls National Park was protected as a game reserve in 1926. It was then declared a national park in 1952 becoming the first national park in Uganda.
Murchison Falls was named by Samuel Baker in 1864 after Sir Roderick Murchison who was heading the Royal Geography Society. During Idi Amin’s regime, the name was changed to Kabalega Falls after Omukama (King) Kabalega of Bunyoro, although it was never legally promulgated.
Eventually, it was changed after the fall of Idi Amin. The movie the African Queen starring Humphrey Bogart and Kathrine Hepburn was acted in Murchison Falls National Park.
