3 Days Chimp Trekking Uganda Safari In Kibale Forest National Park – Detailed Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Travel From Kampala To Fort Portal Area, Visit The Amabere Caves, Hike The Fort Portal Crater Lake Field & Transfer To Kibale National Park

Have a gorgeous breakfast at your hotel in Kampala at around 6:30 am and drive to the Fort Portal area which is about a 300 km (5-6 hours) drive. You will transfer passing through the stunning countryside landscapes of Uganda.

This journey is full of scenic views including the scenic Mubende hills and many small towns en the routes of Mpigi, Mityana, Mubende, and Kyenjonjo. You will arrive in Fort Portal town a lovely area of Uganda and you will have lunch in one of the best restaurants.

After a wonderful lunch, head to Amabeere Caves which were named after their stalactite formation. The breast-like features in these caves are believed to have belonged to Nyinamwiru who was the daughter of King Bukuku.

Nyinamwiru was so beautiful that every man by that time wanted to marry her. Her father received many marriage proposals from men to take her daughter even from unsuitable suitors. This made her father cut off her breasts so that she becomes less attractive.

After exploring the caves, encounter on a hike to the magical Fort Portal Crater Lake field. When here, you will navigate the challenging slopes of Kyeganywa hill.

Note:

This hill is bounded by a range of striking crater lakes and crater hollows (some of which are over 400 meters deep). They give one of the most beautiful scenic sites in Uganda. On a clear day, when on top of the Kyeganywa hill, you get outstanding views of the Rwenzori Mountains.

From exploring the amazing crater field, transfer to Fort Portal town from which you drive 26 km to Kibale National Park. Arrive in the evening for relaxation, dinner, and overnight stay.

The highlight of the day: A heritage tour to Amabere Caves and a hike to the scenic Fort Portal Crater Lake Field.

Day 2: Morning Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale National Park & Afternoon Bigodi Wetland Walk

Enjoy a morning breakfast at around 6:30 am and transfer to Kanyanchu Visitor’s Center. Upon arrival, you will meet with the expert local guide who will guide you into the Kibale rainforest during the wonderful Chimpanzee trekking which starts at 8 am.

However, this enticing activity starts with a short briefing concerning the Chimpanzee trekking experience. You get to know the dos and don’ts of the activity. After this briefing, you go into the forest in search of the Chimpanzees.

Visitors have trekked Kibale’s Chimps since 1993 and there is a 95% chance of seeing the apes since the forest has over 1,500 individuals. And also this trek takes around 2-5 hours.

Once you encounter the Chimpanzees, you are limited to being with them for 1 full magical hour. Also, the group size is limited to 6 visitors, and tourists tracking the apes should all be above the age of 12.

As you are tracking the apes in the lush green forest, you will be surrounded by birds, colorful butterflies, and other primates.

You may have at least to see 5 or 7 other monkeys and these are likely to be;

You will finally meet with the Chimpanzees that have been habituated making it safe for you to move closer and watch them. However, come close but from a safe intimate distance of 8-10 meters, and it is the perfect opportunity to take pictures.

It is a feeling of a lifetime when you come face to face with man’s closest relatives in the animal kingdom. You will feel a captivating sense of awareness as the Chimpanzees show off the same human behaviors and emotions.

You may see the Chimpanzee mother’s love for her baby or the harm of a younger sibling. Indeed Chimpanzee trekking is an outstanding adventure.

Once you are with the Chimpanzees, you have 1 full hour to be with them and you can as well take many photos as you can.

After encountering the Chimpanzees, you can return to the starting point and meet again with your guide and enjoy your packed lunch. Afterward, embark on a 2-hour swamp walk within the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary.

This wetland sanctuary is a top Eco-tourist attraction and is home to over 200 bird species but more importantly, it also features a heritage encounter with the local people.

It also has a craft center which gives a great opportunity to explore the local way of life. Retreat from the activity for relaxation, dinner, and overnight.

Day 3: Cycle In Mpanga Tea Estate (Optional) & Transfer Back To Kampala With A Visit To The Nakayima Tree En Route

After breakfast at around 8 am, transfer back to Kampala connecting 26 km to Fort Portal town, and proceed to a 300km about 5 hours drive to Kampala.

However, before embarking on the journey, you can opt to embark on a cycling adventure in Mpanga Tea Estate. On this adventure, you will explore the stunning tea plantation on a bike as you are escorted by a local guide.

You will also make another stop in Mubende so that you visit the Nakayima Tree. It is majorly known as the Bachwezi sacrificial site in Buganda. This amazing tree is predicted by scientists to be between 500 and 1,000 years old.

This outstanding tree towers almost 40 m above its surroundings. It has big buttress roots that buff out amazingly to form a dozen sounding hollows where each of them belongs to a specified spirit.

The most well-known spirit devoted to this tree is the Nakayima spirit and it works on fertility and various illnesses. The other is Ndahura for smallpox though others are in their perspective buttressed rooms.

These include;

  • Nabuzana (marriage)
  • Walumbe (death and diseases)
  • Mukasa (lakes and rivers)
  • Bamweyana (madness)

This tree is still an active shrine visited by Bachwezi cultists from Buganda and Bunyoro. They come to pay their respects or leave offerings like coins, cowrie shells, gourds, food, etc to relevant spirits.

It is most common when a group of cultists visits, they often spend a night by the tree and roast a goat or pig as they honor the incumbent priestess. Legends have it that he left under the tree to serve in that role since the 1960s.

You will have your lunch in Mubende and you will then proceed with your journey back to Kampala. This will mark the end of your 3 days Chimpanzee trekking safari Uganda tour.
