Chimp trekking is done while following the existing trails in the forest.

Budongo Forest is an extension of Murchison Falls National Park. This forest is among East Africa’s largest rain forests covering an area of 825km2.

The forest has the highest number of Mahogany and iron trees in Uganda and the whole of East Africa. Budongo is just 30 minutes away from Kichumbanyobo gate and it is part of Murchison Falls Conservation Areas.

Budongo Forest Reserve has over 600 chimpanzees making over 4 chimp communities. The Budongo Conservation Field Station is monitoring and studying the Chimpanzees in the forest. It manages 3 chimp communities within the forest.

On your Uganda tour in Murchison Falls Park, expect to do Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Forest at Kaniyo Pabidi an eco-tourism site in the forest.

Kaniyo Pabidi supports 1 Chimpanzee community estimated to number around 100 individuals. The Chimpanzee Community is centered closest to Budongo Eco-lodge and has been habituated for tracking since the late 1990s.

This makes the forest a good place for chimpanzee trekking while on your Chimpanzee safaris in Uganda.

The Jane Goodall Institute was habituating the Kaniyo Pabidi Chimpanzee community but it is now managed by Budongo Eco-Lodge. The lodge took over the responsibility in August 2009 under the management of Uganda Lodges.

Budongo Eco-Lodge is in conjuction with the National Forest Authority to ensure the safety of the chimpanzees and the development of the tourism site.

How Is Chimpanzee Trekking In Budongo Forest Done?

You can do the remarkable Chimpanzee Trekking in Budongo Forest twice a day when on your chimpanzee safaris in Uganda. Also, you can combine the experience option with your Murchison falls safari creating excitement for longing days.

Chimp trekking starts with a briefing at the headquarters of the Kaniyo Pabidi tourism eco-site at 8 am. This usually takes 30 minutes. Briefing breaks the air of the dos and don’ts when trekking the Chimpanzees in the forest.

How Chimpanzee Trekking Briefing Is Conducted At Kaniyo Pabidi In Murchison Falls National Park

A senior ranger guide leads the Chimpanzee trekking briefing at Kaniyo Pabid. First, he tells you about a quick history of the Forest and the chimpanzees you are going to track. Second, he reads out the rules to follow during the activity.

Some of these rules are, not chasing away the chimpanzees, not littering in the forest, and always being near the ranger at all times.

He goes on to mention other wildlife you will find in the forest during your trekking.

Not only that, he continues to explain why they hold firearms during the activity.

The firearms are for protection in case you when encountering dangerous animals in the forest. This is when he is supposed to shoot and scare away the animals if in contact.

Tourists are entitled to ask any questions during this briefing. However, more questions can be asked during the activity as rangers are interactive.

When the briefing is complete, the senior ranger allocates different rangers to embark on the activity with a given group.

Chimpanzee Trekking In Budongo Forest Time At Kaniyo Pabidi

Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Forest at Kaniyo Pabidi is done twice per day though at different time intervals.

That is in the morning (8 am) and afternoon (2 pm). It is done during this time because the apes are more active during these times of the day.

In the morning, you can see Chimpanzees leaving their nests from up in the trees. They move down and start gathering ripe fruits, flowers, and leaves for food.

Usually nursing female Chimpanzees stay with babies as the males and other chimpanzees gather the food.

For afternoons, you get to see Chimpanzees howling and screeching from the ground and playing with each other. When it comes to evening, Chimpanzees start bending tree branches to make new nests for the night.

1 group consisting of 8 people is allowed to track per session. A ranger leads the group. He holds a gun and a walk talky for communication with fellow rangers.

Clients can always interact with the ranger to get to know about the chimpanzees and other wildlife in the forest.

Set off for the activity following the different walking trails in the forest. Most groups locate Chimps within an hour of setting off, though the activity can be between 3-4 hours.

This depends on where the Chimpanzees nested the previous day as they tend to move deeper in the forest in some seasons. It takes longer to track and locate the primates during those seasons.

Other Uganda Primates Are Sighted During This Tremendous Activity Such As

Blue Monkeys

Olive Baboons

Vervet Monkeys

Red-tailed Monkeys

Black and White Colobus Monkeys

Nocturnal primates like Pottos and Galagos

Many Uganda Bird Species Are Seen As Well During Chimpanzee Trekking In Budongo Forest Like;

· African Dwarf Kingfisher

· Crowned Eagle

· Black-Eared Ground Thrush

· Blue-Breasted Kingfisher

· Cassin’s Hawk Eagle

· Crested Guinea Fowl

· Chestnut-Capped Flycatcher

· Plain Greenbul

· Puvel’s Illadopsis

· Sabine’s Spine Tail

· White-Spotted Fluff Tail

· White-Thighed Hornbill

· Yellow-Crested Woodpecker

· Yellow-Footed Flycatcher

Forest-Related Uganda Animals Can Be Spotted During Chimpanzee Trekking In Budongo Forest Include;

Forest Elephants

Forest Buffaloes

Forest Giant squirrels

Uganda Kob

Bush Bucks

Bush Duikers

How Long Do You Be With The Chimpanzees During Chimpanzee Trekking in Budongo Forest

When the chimpanzees are located, you are permitted to be with them for 1 full hour. The 60 minutes with the chimpanzees are memorable as you get to see them grooming each other and gathering fruits for food.

The one hour gives the best opportunities for photography as you are near and up close to the Chimpanzees.

You enjoy seeing these apes jumping on tree branches, nursing their young ones, and howling in their natural habitat.

How Are Chimpanzees Tracked In Budongo Forest In Murchison Falls National Park?

Generally, rangers do the tracking as the tourists trek following the rangers. Chimpanzee tracking involves following the apes’ tracks that were left behind.

Tracks can be foot tracks, dung, housing nests, or leftover fruits.

Before clients do the Chimpanzee trekking, usually, rangers have already tracked down the chimpanzees and know their current location.

Foot Tracks or Thumb Prints: Chimpanzees are 4 limbed apes and mostly use all their limbs for locomotion.

As the chimpanzees are moving, they live prints on the ground which rangers use for tracking them.

Housing Nests: Chimpanzees bend tree branches to form nests for sleeping. However, one needs to be keen and skilled to identify the nests of the apes.

Rangers sight the nests and tell the presence of the Chimpanzees in the trees.

Chimpanzee Dung: When rangers are tracking the Chimpanzees, they look at the dung to determine how recently the apes have been in the area.

If the dung is dry, then the chimpanzees are a bit far though when it is wet then they are near.

Leftover Fruits And Leaves: Chimpanzees are clever creatures in that they eat and chew though they discard the unwanted parts of a fruit.

When rangers are tracking, they use the leftover fruits to find clues about where the apes are. On the fruits, teeth formation remains drawn on them at most times.

What Are The Levels Of Fitness Required For Chimpanzee Trekking In Budongo Forest?

There is no need to worry about your fitness levels when going to trek chimpanzees during your chimpanzee safari in Uganda.

The walking trails and terrains in Budongo Forest are flat making it easy for everyone to trek.

The levels of fitness may be caused by age but all it takes is moderate fitness. If it all fails, porters are always available for your support.

They will lift your bags making you lighter and more energetic for the trek.

You can always use walking sticks for extra stamina and balance for a great trekking experience.

Trekking Chimpanzees is not only for those with good physical appearance. It is for the crippled as well as they can be carried on sedan chairs to meet their dream. However, this comes at a small charge from the porters lifting you.

Chimpanzee Trekking Permit At Kaniyo Pabidi

A Chimpanzee trekking permit is a legal document given to an individual permitting them to participate in the activity. The permit document has a permit number or ID no, your full name, and a tracking date.

This permit is inclusive of rangers and field assistants who will guide you and protect you throughout the entire activity. The Chimpanzee trekking Uganda permit at Budongo Forest excludes entrance fees unlike that of Kibale National Park.

Please Note. You can only use a Chimpanzee trekking Uganda permit once on its allocated date. However, it can be rescheduled to a new date though this should be done a few weeks before the tracking date.

Where To Buy A Chimp Trekking Permit In Murchison Falls National Park?

Chimp Trekking permits in Murchison Falls National Park are only purchased at Budongo Eco-Lodge.

16 permits are issued by Budongo Eco-Lodge daily.

Permits are only sold to those above the age of 15 years as this is a strict and precautionary measure. In some cases, officials at the site have to check each tracker’s passport details for clarity.

However, minors below 15 years of age can be permitted to track chimpanzees only if their parents agree to sign a consent form allowing them to do the activity.

How Much Is A Chimpanzee Permit In Budongo Forest?

A Chimpanzee trekking Uganda permit at Kaniyo Pabidi is $120 and habituation is $ 230 per person. This is possible when you are in contact with local tour operators as they sometimes have permits on standby.

Tourists are free to buy permits directly from the lodge. However, the most suitable and enjoyable time is in the dry months or the peak season.

The dry months of Uganda are from December to February and from June to August.

In the dry months, Chimpanzee trekking trails are dry and accessible as little or no rainfall is received in the forest. This makes it easier to track and see the chimps and other wildlife like birds and animals.

However, Chimpanzees may tend to move deeper into the forest in search of food resulting in longer treks.

Advantage Of Chimpanzee Trekking In Budongo Forest In Murchison Falls Park In The Wet Months In

The wet months in Uganda are from March to April and from September to November.

In the wet months, there is abundant fruit and flowers in the forest so the Chimpanzees do not move as such. The falls are an impressive sight from the boat cruise but the hike brings you closer to the natural wonder.

It is an opportunity for you to see a lot of nature’s secrets during your safari in Uganda. When embarking on the hike, you get to see many Uganda bird species and Uganda primates like Olive baboons and monkey species.

Murchison falls hike is undoubtedly rewarding with tremendous views. The trail followed from the bottom of the falls is made of cemented steps that can test one’s fitness levels.

Anyone can hike to the top of the falls as it is less challenging compared to the hikes of the Rwenzori Mountains.

Hiking to the top of Murchison Falls takes around 45 minutes.

There Are Two Possible Ways Of Reaching The Top Of The Falls;

Tagging the hike to a boat launch is the more rewarding.

Driving to the top of the falls

Tagging The Murchison Falls Hike To A Boat Launch

Right from the adrenaline-rising boat cruise, the fun continues. You straight away begin the exciting hike to the top of the iconic falls.

The boat launch takes you to Bakers point where the hike starts. Baker’s Point is where Sir Samuel Baker stood in 1864 when he was naming the falls.

You then ascend on a tree-shaded footpath known as the Winston Churchill Trail. This is the route that was used by Winston Churchill in 1907.

The British explorer trekked down from the top of the falls before he sailed off to South Sudan.

Hearing the thunderous roar from the falls will increase your speed as you will want to witness the strength of the falls.

This short journey gives the best scenic views of the area with rolling hills from a distance. Phenomenal Uganda bird species within the vegetation types are sighted as they nest and feed.

Before reaching the top of the falls, you get clear views of the Uhuru Falls which are breathtaking.

Uhuru falls separated from Murchison falls right after Uganda got its independence in 1964.

When you reach the top of the falls you forget about the endless steps that you have hiked as the water sprays on your face.

This is the best time for photography and videography as you capture River Nile squeezing to pass in an 8-meter gorge.

Please Note

Always organize or arrange for your pick-up when you reach the top of the falls.

Getting To The Top Of The Falls By Road

The top of the falls is reached along a sporadically steep and rough 15km road that branches north from the main Paraa road.

It then branches off at a signposted junction about 500 meters past Sambiya River Lodge.

From the car park, a short footpath leads downhill to the waterfall’s head and a fenced viewpoint.

From here, one can truly appreciate the staggering power of the Nile crashing through a narrow gap in the escarpment.

The force of the water produces a deafening roar and voluminous spray.

From this main viewpoint, a longer footpath, perhaps 20 minutes walking time, leads to Baker’s Viewpoint on a ridge.

Baker’s viewpoint looks directly towards Murchison Falls as well as the broader Uhuru Falls.

The face-on view of the two cataracts, separated by a lushly forested hillock– is truly inspiring.

However, it is surpassed by following another footpath down to the base of the short gorge below the two waterfalls.

If you want to check out all the viewpoints. Allow at least 2 hours, ideally in the afternoon, when the sun is better positioned for photography.

There is much wildlife in the vicinity of the falls and it is considered safe to walk unaccompanied between the viewpoints. However, you may encounter troops of Olive Baboons and Black-and-White Colobus Monkeys.

The bat cliff immediately south of the main waterfall visible from Baker’s viewpoint is worth scanning with binoculars for raptors and swallows.

If patient until dusk, you should be able to see bat hawks soaring around in search of a quick dinner.

After dusk, the drive from the top of the falls back to the road is particularly good for nocturnal birds.

Notable Birds

The notable nocturnal birds seen include the Eagle Owl and (seasonally) Africa’s three most spectacular and distinctive nightjar species.

Long-Tailed Nightjar (Mar-Aug)

Pennant Winged Nightjar (March-Sep)

Standard-Winged Nightjar (Sep-Apr).

Murchison Falls Hike Fees -Cost

Visitor category

Fees(per person)

Foreign non-resident

US$15

Foreign resident

US$10

East African citizen

UGX10,000

Please Note;

Murchison falls hike fees exclude the park entrance fee.

Hiking fees must be paid in advance at the ticket office at Paraa.

After payments are done, a ranger guide will be allocated to escort you on foot between the landing point and Barker’s View.

Time For Going For Murchison Falls Hike

Murchison falls hike is done in the morning and afternoon.

We would advise you to do the hiking in the morning as the temperatures tend to be low in the morning hours.

Morning hours provide the best sightings for birds as they are more active leaving their nests.

Afternoon hours are mostly hot in Murchison Falls which brings up quick exhaustion as the body is drained. Also on that note, the sightings along the hiking trail are usually in hiding during the afternoon hours.

However, afternoon hikes are rewarding after reaching the top of the falls and the water sprays onto you. This experience will refresh you and make you forget about the continual steps.

Best Time Of The Year-Best Season For Murchison Falls Hike

Murchison Falls hike is done all year throughout though the best time is in the dry months of the year.

In the dry months, the trail followed is dry and easy to access. Sightings in the dry months come quickly.

During the dry season is when the rainbow is seen as the sun is ever shining on the water spray.

Also, the lighting for photography is clear hence capturing clear pictures.

The dry months of Uganda are from December to February and from June to August.

What to Wear for Murchison Falls Hike

When going for Murchison falls hike, always wear light, and put on light shoes like sneakers or light hiking boots.

Light clothes will at least keep you from not sweating too much as it is most times shining.

Wear light long-sleeved shirts and trousers as these will protect you from insect bites. They will as well protect your body from direct contact with the sun which may burn your skin.

Sunglasses and a hat will reduce the direct sunlight that comes toward your eyes and head.

What To Carry For Murchison Falls Hike

Hiking to the top of the falls may seem to be a short journey of only 45 minutes. However, there are a few items you need to carry with you for the superb hike. Always remember and carry them with you.

Come with a camera that you will use to capture the beauty of the falls. The epic photos or videos will speak for you back home.

Carry your binoculars to get clear sightings of the birds that come along during the hike to the top of the falls.

An insect repellent is of good use since there are mosquitoes and many other insects. Spray it on your body to chase away the insects that may bite you along the way during your hike.

Sunscreen will protect your skin from too much sunlight that may cause damage. This is helpful, especially for those doing an afternoon hike.

Carry water in a reusable bottle that will keep you hydrated throughout your hike to the top of the falls.

Why Go For Murchison Falls Hike?

Hiking to the top of the falls takes you to the world’s strongest waterfalls giving you up close views.

This is where the River Nile bisects the park squeezing through a narrow gorge of 8m dropping 45 meters into the Devil’s Cauldron.

The water hits the rocks creating a thunderous roar and forming the famous rainbow.

The views of the dramatic waterfalls give great opportunities for photography.

Hiking to the top of the falls is one of Murchison Falls National Park highlights.

The hike brings you closer to the world’s strongest waterfalls.

This is where River Nile squeezes to pass through a narrow gorge of 8 meters making a dramatic roar. The extra-ordinary activity involves the catching of fish and releasing it back into the water when it is still alive. The activity is mostly done as a hobby for fun.

It is eco-friendly and conserves nature as fish is not killed for food or commercial benefits.

Murchison Falls National Park is one of the best places to go sport fishing in Uganda as it is rich in fish species. The fish species caught during sport fishing are Tilapia, Nile Perch, Tiger fish, Mudfish, Catfish, and many more.

Sport fishing along the Victoria Nile is extremely fun with the large Nile Perch and Tiger fish offering the main challenge.

Kevin Nicholson in 2013 established the record for rod and line in Murchison Falls National park. His mammoth catch weighed 114kg; just eclipsing Tim Smith’s 113kg catch in 2009.

However, far heavier than the previous official record of 73kg, set by C D Mardach in 1959. Local fishermen claim to have netted specimens weighing up to 160kg.

For those interested in sport fishing during your Murchison falls safari, they need to carry their fishing equipment.

However, keep in mind that all fish caught is not to be killed, it should be laid back in the water alive.

What Are The Methods Of Fishing Used During Sport Fishing In Murchison Falls National Park?

There are various methods of fishing used when sport fishing in Murchison Falls National Park on a safari in Uganda.

The methods used depend on the type of fish you are interested in catching. Some methods may be weak to handle big fish.

The commonly used methods for sport fishing in Murchison Falls Park area;

Bait fishing

Casting lures

Spinning method

Bait Fishing: Bait fishing also known as bottom fishing is the most used activity during sport fishing in Murchison Falls National Park.

In this method, a bait is pined on a hook by the angler raising the tip of the rod when the fish swallows it. The common baits used are worms, small fish, pieces of vegetables, cheese, and many others.

This method requires patience as the angler lays the bait in the water and waits. He/she can adjust the bait by extending it deeper into water areas where fish can notice it.

When the fish is caught, it shakes the rod, signaling the angler, and he spools out the hook with the fish.

Fish caught using this method include tilapia, catfish, and small Nile perch.

Casting lures: Casting lures involves the angler casting the line and retrieving lures immediately once the fish is hooked. The cast and retrieval motions are continuous, so you need to be patient.

This method requires wide space both behind and in front of you where you can cast from without any inconveniences.

The depth of the lure that it goes depends on the speed at which you reel. But most importantly the angle at which you hold the rod and also the design of the lure.

For successful fishing, always ensure that the lure falls to your desired depth.

Spinning method: The spinning method is another popularly used method when sport fishing in Murchison Falls National Park.

Anglers use spinning rods and reels to cast lures and then reel them back.

The movement of the lure attracts fish as it has spinnerbaits that have blades that rotate and produce vibrations. The blades keep fluttering and flashing attracting fish that want to bite the attractive lure.

The spinning method is good as it doesn’t require a lot of fishing equipment gear.

In that case, all anglers are advised to have rods that are between 8 feet and 11 feet with a multiplier reel.

While catching smaller species; a 7 feet spinning rod is recommended.

Where To Go Sport Fishing In Murchison Falls National Park?

Visitors can do sport fishing in two main areas of the park. The areas are; along the Victoria Nile nearing the bottom of the falls (Devil’s Cauldron) and below the Karuma falls near Chobe Safari Lodge.

The most rewarding with more experience is sport fishing at the base of the falls. You hear the thunderous roar of the falls as you look at hippos in water leaning on each other. What an experience!!

One can fish while in the boat down the stream or can stand on the rocks off the river bank. The fishing spot is accessible by boat from Paraa jetty. The other way is walking down from the top of the falls, this takes about 45 minutes.

When To Go Sport Fishing In Murchison Falls National Park?

Sport fishing in Murchison falls National Park is done at any time of the day. However, anglers say that the best catches are in the early morning and late in the day.

This is so because fish generally like the early morning and evening sun as it is cool.

Middays are not suitable for fishing as fish moves deeper when the surface temperatures of water rise.

Fees -Cost Sport Fishing In Murchison Falls National Park

Visitor category

Fees(per person)

Foreign non-resident

US$ 50

Foreign resident

US$ 50

East African citizen

US$ 50

One can pay $150 for 4 days of sport fishing in the park

All fishing fees exclude park entrance fees.

What Is The Best Time Of The Year-Season To Go Sport Fishing In Murchison Falls National Park?

Sport Fishing in Murchison park is done at any time of the year and the large catfish and Nile perch is caught all through.

Though, the best results for fish are when the water level is low since the water is clearer.

That is in the dry months of the year or dry season.

Dry months are from December to February and from June to August. There is a cruise that goes upstream to the bottom of the falls.

It takes you to the area where Ernest Hemmingway’s plane crashed. From there you are assured to see spectacular views of Murchison Falls.

The other cruise that takes you downstream is known as the Nile-Lake Albert Delta Launch cruise.

In detail below, all the boat cruises in Murchison Falls National Park are explained.

Boat Cruise In Murchison Falls National Park To The Bottom Of The Falls| Murchison Falls Boat Cruise

The Bottom of the falls boat cruise is the most admired activity by visitors on a Murchison falls safari.

Murchison falls boat cruise has been the national park’s most rewarding activity since 1959 when Queen Mother inaugurated it.

How Long Is The Boat Cruise In Murchison Falls National Park To The Bottom Of Murchison Falls -Where Does It Start From And Where Does It End?

The Murchison falls boat cruise is around 2-3 hours cruising a 17km distance giving spectacular views of Uganda wildlife.

The trip starts from Paraa Jetty and the boat slowly cruises eastwards along an archetypically African stretch of the Nile. The cruise is fringed by Borassus palms, acacia woodland, and mahogany stands.

After cruising along the eye-catching stretch, it finally docks in a small bay a hundred meters away from the crashing waterfall.

If you are going to hike to the top of the falls, the boat cruise stops at Baker’s point. This is where you set off for the hike.

What Are The Key Attractions To See While On Murchison Falls Boat Cruise? (The Boat Cruise To The Bottom Of The Falls)

Uganda Animals At The River Shores

Wildlife viewing along the way is superb. Expecting lionesses come to the surrounding areas of the track and Queen’s track to prepare for birth.

The thick bushes around the track provide a hiding buffer for the cubs after birth from enemies.

Even though the Victoria track is a bit far from the delta, it has more wildlife near its surroundings like Elephants, Buffaloes, Hartebeests, Uganda kob, and birds.

2.
